Psoriasis is a non-contagious, auto-immune, skin disorder. It causes extra skin cells to grow, resulting in flakey, itchy or sore patches of skin. Although the flakey skin can be silver in colour, the patches can be bright red or pink.

Psoriasis mostly affects the elbows, knees, head and back, but can appear anywhere, including the hands and face, where it's particularly noticeable.

Estimates vary, but around 1 in 50 people in the UK suffer with psoriasis, and there's no known cure. It's not known what causes psoriasis, although problems like injuries or infections can make it worse. It isn't infectious.

There's different type of psoriasis, and most people with the condition have Chronic Plaque Psoriasis, which causes the itchy, flakey, sore, reddened skin patches.

However, some forms of psoriasis (pustular psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis) can end up needing to be treated as a medical emergency, you can read more about the different types of psoriasis at the UK Psoriasis Association here

Like acne, psoriasis is both physically and emotionally difficult to live with, causing not only physical pain but emotional distress if the psoriasis patches are in visible areas.

UNDERSTANDING PSORIASIS, MEDICAL TREATMENTS AND HOW LED PHOTOTHERAPY IN SPALDING CAN HELP REDUCE PSORIASIS

Because there's no cure for psoriasis, standard NHS treatment is all about management, using a variety of topical creams or lotions, and medication. Some people find this works well, but others struggle with the side effects. Some lotions and creams can result in burning or skin irritation.

Methotrexate, a tablet to help with psoriasis, can cause nausea, heighten the risk of liver damage (alcohol can't be consumed while it's being used), and needs to be stopped for prolonged periods before trying for a baby (for both men and women).

Ciclosporin is a medicine that suppresses your immune system and is usually taken daily. However, it can increases your chances of kidney disease and high blood pressure.

Another common medication is acitretin. It's used for severe psoriasis, and can cause dry, cracked lips, dry nasal passages and, in rarer causes, hepatitis. Acitretin can be very harmful to a developing baby, so it's important that women use contraception and do not become pregnant while taking this drug, and for at least 3 years after they stop taking it. However, it's safe for a man taking acitretin to father a baby.

Severe psoriasis may see you referred to a dermatologist, and some people may find they are offered injections or phototherapy UV light based treatment. Sadly, UV light based treatment means exposure to UV light with the same risk of skin cancer as sunlight.

You can read more about the standard NHS treatment for psoriasis here.

STANDARD NHS TREATMENT FOR PSORIASIS

If you've struggled with psoriasis, you may have heard of UV light therapy, but feel concerned about skin cancer.

Happily, the device we use at LED By Light does not emit UV light, so does not carry the same risk.

The Dermalux device we use here at LED By Light is an LED device, so doesn't emit any UV wavelength spectrum light.

LED Phototherapy has been shown to help with psoriasis - as long as the right wavelengths are used. When it comes to treating your psoriasis, we'll use the Dermalux's Red Light (at a wavelength of 633nm) and Near Infrared (at a wavelength of 830nm).

You can read more about why wavelengths matter when it comes to LED Phototherapy here.

Results are individual, but for the best results, you'll likely need an initial series of appointments in a short period of time.

To boost your results further, we recommend daily home use of HYPO21, available to buy here at LED By Light.
