What is acne? How is acne caused?
Acne is really common; it's estimated that 95% of teenagers will have some acne, but for 20 - 30%, this acne will be moderate or severe.
Under the skin, tiny sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum. Sebum is needed to lubricate the hair and skin to stop it drying out, but when our hormones start to change during our teenage years, these sebaceous glands can produce too much sebum.
When there's too much sebum, the hair follicles that the sebum travels through become blocked, and then bacteria on the skin - that's normally harmless - can end up infecting the blocked follicles, resulting in the characteristic papules, pustules, nodules or cysts that are sadly familiar to acne sufferers.
The medical name for this most common form of acne is "acne vulgaris", and it doesn't just affect teenagers - it can affect adults as well.
Women are more likely to have adult acne than men. Adult acne can be triggered by pregnancy, PCOS, smoking and certain medications, including steroids.
Physically, acne can cause significant scarring or hyper-pigmentation of the skin.
Mentally, acne can cause depression and anxiety, with sufferers struggling with low self-esteem, shame and social anxiety as a result of their acne.
UNDERSTANDING ACNE, MEDICAL TREATMENTS AND HOW LED PHOTOTHERAPY IN SPALDING CAN HELP REDUCE ACNE
The standard NHS treatment through your GP for moderate to severe acne is a 12 week (that's three months) course of a topic gel or cream, potentially combined with oral antibiotics.
Sadly, many of the gels or creams can cause the skin to feel sore or uncomfortable.
Females might be offered the contraceptive pill, because acne can be made worse by hormonal changes - although this can sometimes make acne worse.
If, after two courses of treatment (that's six months), acne is still causing problems, the GP may refer you to a dermatologist. You might also be referred if your acne has caused scarring, or is causing persistent emotional distress or what your GP feels is a "mental health disorder"
STANDARD NHS TREATMENT FOR ACNE VULGARIS
Here at LED By Light, we're big fans of the NHS, but we also know that struggling for up to six months with acne is a terribly long time.
Six months would be bad enough as an adult - but for a teenager, it'll feel like a lifetime. It's no surprise that acne is linked to an increased risk of suicide.
And it's great being referred to a dermatologist if you're starting to get scars, or your mental health is suffering - but that feels a bit like closing the barn door after the horse has bolted, doesn't it?
LED Phototherapy has been shown to help with acne - as long as the right wavelengths are used.
You can read more about why wavelengths matter when it comes to LED Phototherapy here.
In fact, LED Phototherapy is sometimes used as a non-pharmaceutical treatment by the NHS.
At LED By Light, we use the medically certified, and clinically proven Dermalux Flex MD to help treat acne, without medication. It's blue light has antibacterial properties that can help kill the bacteria associated with acne, and it's near infra-red light can help with skin healing, too.
Results are individual, but for the best results, you'll likely need an initial series of appointments in a short period of time.
